Red is one of my favorite colors, alright, alright, alright!
That’s why 2 of my previous beers were reds and why I spent the whole evening Saturday drinking in some tasty redheads. I was making a new batch of Revenge Amber Ale and figured I would give a couple of fancy reds a go. Here’s what I thought of them… (I posted these live on the Mike’s Basement Brewery Facebook page)
First beer of the night is Back Pocket Brewery’s “Blood on the Blade Red IPA.”. It’s got the maltiness of a good amber and the cascade hoppiness of an IPA. Thumbs up!
Second beer is Bell’s Amber ale from Comstock, MI.
Watery. Bland. Good mouth feel and carbonation, but that’s about it. Looks like an amber, tastes like a pale. Fucking Michigan. (shakes head slowly)
Third beer is Ballast Point (San Diego, CA). Lists of cascade hops. Great malty flavor, great beer. It might have a little too much crispness (made up word) for an amber, but still. Two thumbs up.
Now trying WestO’s Smoked Red from West Okoboji, Iowa. This fucker is extremely malty. There is very little hops in this thick amber beer with a high alcohol content. I like it, but if you’re not ready, it will bite you.
